How Personality and Motivation Help You Lead and Manage

At PRETECT, effective leadership is about guiding your team toward a goal, even when the path isn’t always clear. Think of persuasion as a journey—you need a roadmap. Understanding your team’s personality and motivation gives you that roadmap, helping you influence behavior and achieve results.

Persuasion involves two parts:

  • Internal – shaping the way people think and feel.
  • External – guiding the actions they take.

While everyone is created equal, we are not created the same. People have different personalities and are motivated by different factors. This means your leadership approach must consider these differences.

When interacting one-on-one, tailor your message to the individual’s personality and motivators. In group settings, you may need a general message, but you can still consider the common traits of the team or profession to make it resonate. For team members who aren’t fully engaged, follow up individually to personalize your approach and strengthen commitment.

Next time you meet with someone on your team, ask yourself: What do I know about their personality? What drives them? Using this insight will help you communicate more effectively and lead your team toward PRETECT’s goals.
