1.2 What is Personality?

What is Personality?

Personality is the unique way a person thinks, feels, and behaves — it shapes how they navigate the world. As a leader, understanding personality helps you guide, motivate, and communicate more effectively with different team members.

Psychologists describe personality through the Big Five Traits (OCEAN):

  • Openness – curiosity and creativity
  • Conscientiousness – organization and reliability
  • Extraversion – sociability and energy
  • Agreeableness – kindness and cooperation
  • Neuroticism (Emotional Stability) – calmness versus stress reactivity

Each trait exists on a scale, not as opposites. It takes time and consistent observation to understand someone’s true personality—moods can change, but traits are stable. Effective leadership starts with self-awareness—knowing your own personality before assessing others.
